About Metamora, IL - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!

Metamora was settled by Yankee settlers from New England who were descended from the English Puritans who settled that region in the 1600s. New Hampshire colonists cleared dense forest, constructed infrastructure and built farms and a small town. Metamora was the county seat of Woodford County from 1843 until 1896 and the Metamora Courthouse State Historic Site is preserved beautifully. The local history is deeply enmeshed with the history and life of Abe Lincoln. The future President practiced law there. Lincoln and his colleagues served as criminal defense counsel, handled divorce and family-law cases, oversaw the passage of estates through probate, and more. Lincoln was involved in well over 70 cases in the Metamora courthouse.

Lincoln's law firm, Lincoln & Herndon, in which he practiced with his partner William Herndon, consisted of only two lawyers. It was based in Springfield, Illinois, and Lincoln was the circuit partner, traveling from county seat to county seat. In these travels, Lincoln made many friends when they took him in out of the cold for lodging or offered them a sip of water in the summer. He met, stayed with, spoke to and made contacts with people all over the region. It is often said that Lincoln learned and sharpened his oratory skills in the Illinois courthouses in this area. This is pretty fascinating to consider.

At the beginning of August, when it is nice and warm and schools have not yet started back, Metamora hosts the annual "Metamora 4x50" race. This is a cycling event in which competitors ride a 50-mile loop four times. The Village of Metamora also puts on Old Settler’s Days annually around the third week of June. The 100-year-old tradition includes:

  • carnival ride
  • live local music
  • food
  • Lincoln-Douglas 5K and 8 Mile Runs
